I work with developers and builders quite often so I am always looking for inspiration to bring to the table before we start a build. The Ber house is a magnificent example of fine lines and breathtaking design, you can feel that the architect walked the soil obsessively to find the exact perfection in the way that the home is placed on the lot. Sometimes modern homes can be quite jarring however with this home I love the fact that in my opinion many of the design elements are inspired by an era over 50 years ago making this home undoubtedly able to stand the test of time in regards to the fine design.
Take a look and let me know what you think?
Nico van der Meulen Architects have completed the Ber house in Midrand, South Africa.
Description from the architects
The client requested a contemporary, iconic house without unnecessary rooms, open plan and airy. They needed 4 suites, a living area and a large study as he does a lot of work from home. The wife originally wanted burglar bars, which is not allowed in the estate, but this was the inspiration for the random steel bars used around the house, which could possibly keep flying elephants out.
The house was designed by Werner van der Meulen of Nico van der Meulen Architects as a simple rectangular shape, with the living rooms in the centre, surrounded by a koi pond and a pool. From the porte cochere one walks over the koi pond to the front door, looking through the hall, dining room and family room at the pool on the north side. The koi pond filled with mature koi surrounds the dining room on two sides. Broken slabs of granite with steel sheets over acts as steps between the dining room and hall to the family room and kitchen. A cantilevered staircase jut out of a granite clad wall, with an illuminated handrail cut into the wall.
The kitchen is enclosed by frameless doors, and opens up to the lanai and the east, facing the garden. A steel grating balcony to the main bathroom on the north-east corner protects the kitchen from too much morning sun. The study faces north and east, with the east side facing the lanai across the pool. A bridge crosses over the living room, connecting the pyjama lounge and kid’s bedrooms with the main suite.
M Square Lifestyle Design used the random patterns evident on the steel facade as inspiration for the interior design. Illuminated ceilings add to the feeling of transparency , while the materials used were chosen to complement the contemporary feel.
B&B Italia, Pedrali and Molteni &C furniture, Foscarini and Zero lamps and Lignet Pure rugs were supplied by M Square Lifestyle necessities, along with steel sculptures by Regardt van der Meulen.

Barbara Bestor is one of the finest architects of this type of house and she has created a masterpiece with this example. In this listing on Roseview she jus simply nails. The house is nestled at the very top of Mount Washington in amongst the greenery with significant views of Downtown LA. The quality that I love the most about this house is that it screams “No Bling” it’s emphasis is on the true lines of the era and all its subtleties.
The home has been completely renovated from top to bottom and features tones in the wood that echo the original architecture along with a magnificent courtyard off the master. It has the hallmark open plan design of course but one of the most prominent features is how the architect has brought the outside in with views of nature from many rooms and with the rather grand sliding doors off the living room that make nauture just as much a part of your living room as your coffee table.
All in all you will have to work hard to find another home in Mt Washington that checks all the boxes of design, location, view and price so I recommend that if this is your kind of home this is one you should definitely visit.
If you would like a private tour of this or any of the homes on my site please contact me .
Filled with glorious light, Architect Barbara Bestor’s first, most dramatic residence gleams with a soulful, seamless continuum of nature drawn indoors. Situated atop Mt. Washington the residence offers a private peaceful oasis. A generous open social space combines living, dining, and kitchen with perfect flow to a large deck and the most impressive cinematic views of downtown L.A. The Master enjoys peaceful courtyard views and stunning bath with glass shower continuing the theme of nature within. Two additional bedrooms share a light-filled bathroom. A lower level bonus room with half bath complete the residence. The generous lot offers room for pool and other creative enviroments.
As far as the Hollywood hills goes there is a definite snob factor in the hills surrounding Sunset Plaza Drive and the renowned Doheny Estates however the hills stretch all the way from Beverly Hills to the West and Los Feliz to the East so there are many parts of the hills not as will known as the area mentioned but just as viable.
Case and point The Outpost Estates and surrounding areas including Macapa. This house sits atop the Outpost area with views that rival any 90069 house. The finishes are beautiful and this is one of the best luxury properties in the area without a doubt.
This property screams quality and is amazingly private which is always a challenge when constructing a home with views. I have no complaints about this home apart from one, which is I feel that the price point its still a little high. I feel that the home is still priced as if it were on “The Plaza” which is why it has not sold in my opinion. 5M it’s not unheard of in this part of the hills at all but it is not the norm so I would stay take another bite out of the price and I think this house will pop and will be well worth it. It’s a fabulous house that everyone in the neighborhood knows that will bring kudos to any buyer.

This house on Viewsite Dr, is next door to the first house I ever sold in the hills a 100 years ago, Viewstite really lives up to its name as the views really are jetliner. Its also nestled deep within the uber chic Sunset Plaza Drive which gives the owner the comfort of being in one of the most sought after zip codes in the US.
For an asking price of $899k although small its a great entry level property on the plaza and would be a fabulous first home for any budding starlet. Surrounded by multi million dollar homes means that the owner would be in good company. If you are looking for desiger chic in amongst the players of the hills this could be the place for you.
“Mid-Century, turn-key stunner on coveted Viewsite Drive. Reworked & renovated in 2008, this view property will enamor clients. Ideal for industry, couples and rising stars. Newly reconfigured central stairwell and entrance from street, new systems and flat rear patio with hot tub and viewing deck. A must see in the evening with the twinkle of city lights and the quiet of this cul-de-sac street. Wonderful neighborhood, ample street parking and easy to show.’
This is one of the most spectacular homes in the Hills available today. The finishes are rich and luxurious and the views speak for themselves.
Its been on the market a little while and I hope it sells soon as it will continue the upward trend of the LA market especially in the hills. The details throughout the house are rich and and chic with the emphasis being the outside in feel.
We shall see, fingers crossed.

Serene Home in Bali, Designed for Entertainment: Lovelli Residence:
Creating a home that would answer the living and entertainment needs of the owner, was the main objective for building the Lovelli Residence, on the west coast of Bali. Studio Word of Mouth therefore envisioned and developed an enjoyable space, where different functions interact and overlap in an original way. Here is more from the architects: “The dining area also becomes a lounge, the living zone flows seamlessly into the pool area, and each bedroom functions also as a living space. The first floor is dominated by the master bedroom, flanked on 3 sides by green terraces, which maximise natural light and enhance the perception of the size of the space. The overall aesthetic of the villa is a tribute to the Mediterranean architecture that played a role in the backgrounds of both the client and Italian-born Audrito. Rounded corners are favoured over hard edges in order to infuse a softness to the imposing lines of the structure“. Would you personally define this home as “fun”?
